Cabinet of Blue Oddities brings to life the hidden energy of a cupboard filled with mismatched, whimsical objects. The objects themselves are left in the natural tones of the wood, while layers of blue paint fill the gaps between them, allowing their forms to emerge through negative space. Beeswax raises the grain and deepens the tone, adding texture, depth, and tactile detail, turning the composition into a playful study of form, light, and rhythm.
The work is created on a pine substrate constructed from a 1980s kitchen shelf unit found in a charity shop in Cornwall. The pine, planted around 1950 and imported from Scandinavia, now carries its own layered history into the piece, linking its material origins to the domestic charm and unexpected surprises of a holiday cottage cupboard.
