This series takes inspiration from L.S. Lowry’s Manchester, reinterpreted through a modern lens. Rectilinear forms, layered perspectives, and rhythmic lines evoke streets, factories, and tower blocks, capturing the movement and busyness of everyday city life past and present. Windows catch the light and clouds reflect memories of smoke as figures move through streets both real and imagined. A blend of past and present stories, industry and pop culture, the grime and sunshine of Manchester, and the city’s vibrant contemporary buzz.
The paintings are built on reclaimed and vintage woods, including drawer fronts, oak, mahogany, and a fragment of a vintage tea chest. The aged surfaces bring texture and material history into dialogue with the imagery, highlighting the patina of the city and the enduring resonance of its industrial past.
