The Quiet Ebb explores the stillness that follows movement — a pause between tides where energy settles into calm. Through layered timbers and subtle shifts of light across grain and surface, the work holds the sea’s memory in quiet reflection rather than force. Depth and texture emerge gradually, inviting a slower gaze, a sense of balance and grounding.
The montage is constructed from reclaimed woods, each with its own history: oak from an abandoned chest of drawers, mahogany from old pigeon-hole dividers, aged pine from a Lincolnshire windmill hopper, and Scots Pine from a demolished Victorian house, alongside birch and ash. These timbers bring their material narratives into the work, linking the natural character of the wood with human stories, while also reinforcing ecological concerns and the enduring dialogue between land, sea and the erosion.
